Hugh,
You've guessed right. The validator doesn't check the LDR -- but I can recify that.

Stacy (and anyone else who might be interested),
In the .mrk version of your data the LDR ends with a redundant space, so
the LDR is an illegal length. When the .mrc record is compiled this
causes the Directory (which normally you don't otherwise have to pay any
attention to, and rarely see unless you look at the raw data) to be
corrupted. Which, in turn - yes, you're ahead of me - means that the
record comes out looking "wrong" in any application that knows how to
work with MARC records (not just MarcEdit, I can assure you!).
You'd get the same sort of result with any LDR of invalid length, not
just all-but-invisible blanks.
The MARC validator doesn't seem to check the length of the LDR (but I
haven't checked that very thoroughly).
There may be something Terry can do to tighten things up in this regard,
but how often do any of us have invalid LDRs? I'd guess this is a very
rare situation (famous last words!)
Hope this helps.
Hugh
