Hi Terry:

Is MarcEdit able to support data harvested from a dcq feed to create MARC records instead of a plain oai_dc feed?

In other words, if I type in the Server Address of the Metadata Harvester: http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/do/oai/?verb=ListRecords&metadataPrefix=dcq

and use a crosswalk between DCQtoMARCXML, can I achieve this?

Thanks,

Marielle Veve

Subject: Re: Question on harvesting OAI using MarcEdit????

Hi,

So the problem is that a few of your values are incorrect. I looked at your resource, and the base URL redirects to: http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/do/oai/ -- so let's start with that as the server address. Using that, I wanted to make certain that the set name was correct. My guess was that it wasn't. So I asked the server to list sets with this command: http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/do/oai/?verb=ListSets

I see the UNF Theses and Dissertations setSpec is publication:etd. So, I'm assuming that's what I want to harvest -- so that is the set spec I will use.

Finally, the dates. OAI servers support specific date formats. You can find out by asking the server to describe itself, but by and large, the format is generally -- yyyy-mm-dd. If you only include a yyyy or yyyy-mm -- the request will fail. So, I'm assuming you were looking for content in 2013 -- so I set the values at: 2013-01-01 and 2013-12-31.

When I ran this, I get a collection of data. One more note -- the translation is a basic one (using LCs mappings). You may need to update it to make it more granular if you find the translation insufficient for your needs.

Hi there:

I am trying to harvest DC metadata from my institutional repository (UNF Digital Commons) and convert it into MARC21 using the MarcEdit 5.9 tool. Plug in the server address, chose a stylesheet, etc, but when I press ok it generates the a message (image is attached to this email) saying: “Error generated by the OAI request. Error Name: badArgument….etc” What does this means? That: 1) MarcEdit cannot access the metadata from my institutional repository (server address is not correct)?; or 2) the metadata provided by my institutional repository is not correct?; or 3) Other reason?

Please help me here as I am trying to use this to harvest records into OCLC

Thanks for your help,
