Thanks, Terry. I'll try to look for a consistent pattern. What I remember of the event the second time it occured was that I WAS in preview mode (don't usually use it but I had just opened the file with the sole intent of doing a "save as" to make a copy for safety's sake. I didn't check the count, or that of the copy, at that time. I only noticed the loss of records when I then used the extract function. The copy also had lost records.

That's interesting -- if you encounter this, I'd be interested in knowing if it is occurring reliably after a specific edit action? Field count counts a virtual file, and maybe that file reference isn't being set after a specific edit. If you notice any trends related to edits/versus when you see this occur, if you still run into this, would help.

Margaret: I had this problem, or thought I had. When I notice a drop in the field count--and in a big file I check after every edit--I immediately close the file without saving changes. When I go back all the records are there and I can re-edit without any problem. But why does the field count drop in the first place?

I keep losing records. I will make a number of edits to a file, and all goes well. Then all of a sudden I lose most of the file. I admit I'm working with a largish file (10,000 bibs) but I don't understand why I can make changes without a problem if size were the issue.
I think someone else on this list had this problem but I can't remember what they thought was causing it.
