Each pair is independent, so you can pair one way if you like. At this
point, the pairing field is one to one -- but I could fairly easily expand
it to accommodate something more flexible.

That's quite nice. Do both fields have to be paired for it to work, or can
it be a 1-way pairing? For example, a record must always include 8xx (more
accurately: 800, 810, 811, or 830) if 490 1\ is present, but if an 8xx is
present, justification of that 8xx can be in 490 or 500 (or potentially
elsewhere). So, could you say "paired\t8xx", but not have "paired\t490", and
how would this work when you want to pair with multiple possible fields
rather than 1-to-1? Is it possible to specify that you only want the pairing
to happen in association with certain indicators (490 1\, but not 490 0\)?
