Hi Terry,

Thanks for your feedback. Here's some additional information about our process.

We're using Polaris version 7.0. It will take any format but we prefer UTF-8.
We receive marc files from our member libraries, which they have
exported from vendor tools such as Baker & Taylor and Ingram. I don't
know what format these files are in. I also generate marc files using
the same tools, based on cataloging requests submitted by other member
libraries.

I open these files in MarcEdit to make any changes and customizations
we need. When I run through the Marc Breaker process, I notice that
the default format displays as MARC8 and the convert to UTF-8 box is
checked. Then I import them into Polaris. The majority of the marc
files we work with do not originate from Polaris, but are from
external sources that are then loaded into Polaris. On the occasions
when I have to export marc records from Polaris, I export in UTF-8
format.

My main concern is that the diacritics are preserved correctly. The
above process seems to work correctly, but I want to make sure I'm
doing things right. I also noticed recently that my part time remote
cataloger loaded a file and the diacritics were all messed up. She
gets the files in the same way as described above, but I don't know
what is happening with her settings.

I hope this is helpful. If you need anything else, let me know.

Those are really the only two questions and matter in this case as MarcEdit automatically detects encoding and works appropriately.

If data is exported in UTF8, you don't need to do anything. Break the files and make them without any other settings, MarcEdit won't change the encoding. The only caveat here is around normalization. UTF8 has multiple normalizations -- two are important to libraries. You'll need to determine which normalization your ILS requires.
