Thanks for your reply Terry and for MarcEdit.  It's an invaluable tool.

From within the batch search window, under Search Types, what would I 
enter beside the custom radio button to search by author and title?  And what 
formatting would be required within my flat file of authors and titles?

And within the Merge Records utility, if I turn off 020 and turn on 100 and 
245, it seems like the utility simply smashes the two files together rather than 
making a thoughtful merge.  In other words, it overlays fields from the first 
record in the merge file with fields in the first record from the source file, even 
though the 100 and 245 fields clearly don't match.
