Archival Assistant Position in Special Collections Research Center
The University Libraries’ Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) has an opening for a graduate student to help create a scholarly portal for the John W. Burton Papers.
Burton was a member of the Australian Diplomatic Service in his early career and was part of the Australian delegation sent to San Francisco after World War II to establish the United Nations. He later went on to teach diplomacy and conflict resolution and published several books on the topics. In the 1980s Burton joined George Mason University to create the Center for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, now known as the School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution (SCAR).
The John W. Burton papers contain materials from Burton's work in international relations and conflict resolution from the 1940s through the 1990s. It includes correspondence, working papers, notes, news clippings, scholarly publications, workshop and conference material, images, and memorabilia. It also contains materials pertaining to the creation of the George Mason University School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution (S-CAR).
The graduate assistant will be responsible for the following:
• Surveying the collection and identify items for digitization and inclusion into the portal
• Digitizing items and convert to proper file formats for preservation and inclusion the portal
• Accurate reporting and documenting of project progress
The project will run 13 weeks from August 2016 until December 2016.
Applicants for the position must have strong research and writing skills, some knowledge of scanning technology and pdf creation, and the ability to work 16-20 hours per week.
Rate of pay will be $15.00/hr.
