The offices of Women and Gender Studies, LGBTQ Resources, African and
African American Studies, the Folklore Department, the Office of
International Programs and Services are co-sponsoring a film screening
and panel discussion on Monday, March 18, 4:30-7 p.m. in the JC
Cinema.///Getting Out/, produced by the Refugee Law Project at Makerere
University in Kampala, Uganda, explores the reality that for some LGBTI
Africans, “coming out” is not an option. Before they can “come out,”
they first have to “get out.” This means not only finding a way to
escape the political forces promoting homophobia at home, but also
confronting the hypocrisies and failings of asylum systems around the
world.
Filmed in Uganda, South Africa, Geneva, and London,/Getting Out/depicts
the stories of five individuals navigating their way through this
complex issue. The film screening will be followed by a panel discussion
on transnational sexualities and human rights featuring two top scholars
in the field, Dr. Amy Shuman, author of /Rejecting Refugees: Political
Asylum in the 21^st Century, /and Dr. Wendy Hesford, author of
/Spectacular Rhetorics: Human Rights, Visions, Recognitions, Feminisms/.
Reception will follow the event. Attached you will find an event flyer
