George Washington's Mind, or, A General's Genius

by William M. Ferraro
Assistant Professor, Assistant Editor
University of Virginia
504 Alderman Library

Many of George Washington's contemporaries thought little of his
intellect. John Adams, for instance, wrote "That Washington was not a
scholar is certain. That he was too illiterate, unlearned, unread for
his station and reputation is equally past dispute."

Such flippant dismissals of Washington's mind persist in the
historical literature. Taking issue with these denigrating
portrayals, Dr. Ferraro demonstrates the potency of Washington's mind
and the centrality of Washington's intellect to his achievements
through an analysis of Washington's immense and impressive
correspondence, especially his Revolutionary War letters.

William M. Ferraro is an assistant professor and assistant editor
with the Papers of George Washington at the University of Virginia .
His talk, draws heavily on recently edited documents and addresses a
surprisingly minimized topic in the biographical literature of this
foremost American, Virginian, and Fairfax citizen.
