Dear history friends, department heads, and directors of graduate studies,
I would like to bring to your attention a non-academic job in history 
ideal for recent PhDs and ABDs. Educational Testing Service in 
Princeton, NJ, is hiring an "Assessment Specialist I" -- a test 
developer -- to work on World History exams. This is similar to the job 
that I started out in. This position involves writing and reviewing test 
questions, working with committees of college faculty and high school 
teachers to make sure that tests measure appropriate content, and 
helping to coordinate the scoring of essays. The new person would 
largely be working on the Advanced Placement (AP) World History exams 
but also work on teacher licensure and other tests.
It's a really good job for someone with an advanced degree in history 
who wants to work outside of academia. The new person would be part of a 
group of about 20 historians and social scientists who perform similar 
jobs; work with historical issues on a daily basis; have frequent 
opportunities for interaction with scholars and teachers in the outside 
world; earn a reasonable salary and benefits; and have the opportunity 
to live in what I think is a nice part of the country.
