The History Graduate Student Association at Virginia Tech invites proposals for papers to be presented at the 19th Annual Brian Bertoti Innovative Perspectives in History Graduate Conference.  This interdisciplinary conference will be held at the Virginia Tech Graduate Life Center in Blacksburg, VA on March 18-19, 2016. Our conference is an opportunity for sharing graduate research projects in a supportive, professional environment, and a chance to network with your future colleagues. Papers on any aspect of history are welcome; this year we especially want to encourage proposals from graduate students with an interest in public history. Our conference values interdisciplinary approaches to the past, and we invite proposals from graduate students in related disciplines whose work represents “innovative perspectives in history.” In previous years, students from programs as diverse as Science and Technology Studies (STS), Religion and Culture, and Social, Political, Ethical, and Cultural Thought (ASPECT) have been well represented among presenters.

Each year, HGSA acknowledges the best paper presented at the conference with the Brian Bertoti Award for Outstanding Historical Scholarship. To be considered for this award, presenters must submit the paper (as it will be presented) to the Awards Committee by February 27, 2016.

Conference Speakers

Dr. Andrew Kahrl, Assistant Professor of History and African American Studies at the University of Virginia, is this year’s conference keynote speaker. Dr. Kahrl’s research uses the history of southern beaches (the leisure landscape of the shore) to examine American race relations in the 20th century.  His 2012 publication The Land Was Ours: African American Beaches from Jim Crow to the Sunbelt South earned the 2013 Liberty Legacy Foundation Award for “best book of the civil rights struggle from the beginnings of the nation to the present.” Dr. Kahrl will speak on coastal development, public and private beaches, and unequal access to leisure and recreational space in America.

Saturday, March 19th, Dr. Karen L. Cox, Professor of History at UNC, Charlotte and founding director of the school’s public history program, will be our lunch speaker. Her lecture is titled "Poppin' Tags on the American South: One Historian's Take on Region and Culture."  In this lecture, Dr. Cox will bring the public historian’s gaze to bear on questions about southern history and culture and connections to regional identity. Using as the lens her own career as a woman in academia, Dr. Cox offers a look at what it’s like to present southern history and culture in a range of contexts each with its own unique audience.
