Position Description
Graduate Research Assistant / Digital Humanities
July 2015
Position supports combining research, information organization, curation and scholarship to enhance student learning and faculty engagement through digital technologies.
* Assists librarians in providing research support for digital humanities initiatives through
* website editing and management
* development of tutorials for humanities research resources and instruction
* development of other web research tools that address user needs
* creating digital objects as needed/required
* developing research guides for digital humanities tools and methodologies, such as data visualization tools, Scalar, Omeka, digital collections, a humanities data curation information guide, text mining tools, and XML/XSLT and
* Assists in teaching workshops on digital humanities and humanities research
* Assists in digital humanities scholarship environmental scans
* Assists in developing digital humanities project ideas, finding data, and crafting compelling proposals for internal and/or external funding
* Assists with schema and metadata
* Develops and maintains digital humanities project documentation and repository
Requirements
* Successful completion of or currently enrolled in
* HIST 696 CLIO Wired: An Introduction to History and New Media <http://historymasters.gmu.edu/courses/hist696?term=201570> or
* Other relevant Mason Graduate course(s) in digital scholarship
* Strong technology skills.
* Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, Javascript, Ruby, R, SPSS, CSS, Stata, etc.
* Familiarity with software such as Photoshop
* Familiarity with video capture software, i.e, Captivate, Camtasia, etc.
* Experience with using a broad range of arts and humanities electronic resources.
* Experience with analyzing data
* Ability to read music desirable but not required
* Strong research, communication, presentation, and project management skills
* Understanding of web standards and accessibility guidelines
* Ability to develop and maintain detailed and accurate resources
* Initiative, creativity, problem solving, cooperation, reliability, attention to detail
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Preferred
* Experience writing technical documents for non-technical users
* Understanding of metadata

The Graduate Research Assistant / Digital Initiatives will research, design and develop digital solutions to maximize resources and
* Gain practical experience with "real world" digital research projects
* Be able to use Omeka or similar software to design online exhibits on DH related topics for libraries and other cultural institutions
* Apply digital skills to create digital exhibits and other digital scholarship.
* Synthesize best practices and work within a group environment to create course guides.
* Be able to develop effective workflows to achieve project goals.
* Be able to research, develop and deliver a targeted workshop to an appropriate community.
* Be able to research and create online tutorials in library/DH related topics such as database searching, creating an Omeka site, and so forth.
* Be able to teach short instruction sessions for students and/or faculty on library/DH related topics such as database searching, using Omeka with students, etc.
* Be able to apply metadata standards such as Dublin Core, VRA Core, and the Getty vocabularies to specific projects
