Graduate Assistant, Digital Scholarship Specialist

Data Services at Fenwick Library is seeking a Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) for the 2018/2019 academic year. The GRA will be based in the Digital Scholarship Center, assisting students and faculty with the software and tools needed to conduct empirical research and digital scholarship.
Duties: Exact duties will depend on the background, skills, and interests of the GRA, but general duties include: staffing the Digital Scholarship Center lab, helping drop-in users with the supported software, and developing teaching resources.  If interested and able, the assistant will also conduct one-on-one consultations with students and faculty, teach library-offered workshops, and potentially be a guest instructor for university courses.
The cover letter must address any formal or informal experience with teaching or helping others.
Learning Outcomes: The ideal candidate is a researcher in the Social Sciences or Humanities familiar with one of the tools used across digital research (examples of the software we use are: Omeka, R, OpenRefine, Gephi, Tableau, ArcGIS, Stata, NVivo, and so on). The GRA will have many opportunities to extend and refine his or her skills in this area.  We are looking for a student who is interested in and able to learn new computer software and hardware tools (both Mac and PC) and then assist others with their use.
The GRA-ship is focused on developing the technical and practical skills associated with the methodologies learned in his or her graduate program and refining the communication and problem solving skills associated with consulting. Specific learning outcomes will depend on the GRA's program of study and interests.
At the end of the assistantship the student will:

·         demonstrate proficiency with multiple digital scholarship software packages which include: advanced proficiency with a primary software package associated with his or her program of study and methodological expertise; intermediate proficiency with a secondary software package in his or her subject area and methodological expertise; basic competence with SPSS, NVivo, and ArcGIS; and understand all supported software well enough to attain the ability to recommend the appropriate package and to interpret help documentation.

·         be able to identify appropriate and inappropriate analysis or methodological choices in his or her area of specialization.
Hours: 20 hours a week, primarily within M-F 10am-7p, some evenings or weekend hours as needed.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must be registered as full-time graduate students in good standing for the full academic year at George Mason University.

·         Must have formal or informal experience teaching or helping others with research software, digital tools, or technology (of any kind).

·         Must have a strong customer service orientation and the ability to both interact and communicate with a variety of individuals and groups.

·         Must have demonstrated ability to troubleshoot technological problems.

·         Must have education and/or experience in the humanities, social sciences, life sciences, earth sciences, or geography.

·         Must be a self-starter and able to learn new software and hardware.
The cover letter must identify and describe the applicant’s experience with one of the areas listed above, as well as describe any experience with teaching or tutoring.
Applicant must be registered as a full time graduate student, enrolled in at least 6 credit hours and in good standing for the full academic year at George Mason University.  Must have strong customer service orientation and the ability to both interact and communicate with a variety of individuals and groups.  Must be a self-starter and able to learn new software.
 Preferred Qualifications:

·         Teaching or tutoring experience are strongly preferred.

·         Intermediate-level computer skills are strongly preferred.

·         Experience with digital research tools and methods is a plus.

·         A background in the Social Sciences or Humanities is a plus.

·         Experience with a scripting or programming language is a plus.
Salary:
BA/BS – Initial Appointment   $11,948
BA/BS—Renewal  $12,853
MA—Initial and Renewal $14,108
Library GRA positions do not offer tuition waivers and continuation beyond the initial appointment is contingent upon satisfactory job performance and availability of funds.
