Dr. Hooper is offering a directed readings course on oceanic histories in the Spring for an MA student, and is wondering if there are any PhD students who might be interested in joining.  (This would be for a 796 directed readings course, not an 804 - ie, it would take the place of a regular readings seminar.) This 796 on comparative oceanic histories will build upon what graduate students (primarily Americanists) have already learned of the Atlantic world to examine nineteenth-century developments in the Indian Ocean and Pacific worlds. We will discuss older historiographies of the Indian and Pacific oceans before considering more recent publications concerned with Americans in the world during the nineteenth century. We will examine cross-regional topics, especially transnational movements of labor (both voluntary and forced), environmental histories, and comparative imperialisms.
