Subject: Introduction
Sheila,
Just a brief intro, I am retired, my wife and I live in the National Capital Region. I have established WW2 History Archive Inc, a Non Profit 501 c 3. whose purpose is to conduct interviews, preserve and publish the histories of WWII Vets. Please see our website. I have masters in Military History (WWII concentration and Public History. BS degrees are in Engineering and others. I read and use your publication
I read your thesis and have used your book Oral History in the Digital Age. It's a great resource!
I was given honorable mention in 2013 in the House of Representatives for the work we are doing, WWII oral history and sponsoring WWII reunions. We sponsored the last USS Tide reunion and provided a permanent plaque at the US Navy Memorial, which I am sure you are very familiar with having worked for the Navy. In addition to many video interviews, I have collected material on the Tide for many years with the possibility in mind of doing a documentary, even if 20-30 minutes long. I am presently working on three WWII books and lack the time to focus on producing the documentary.
Would GMU have a grad student interested in producing under my guidance? I owuld insist on paying the producer at least $1000 or more as well as naming them as the producer in the film credits.Could they also receive college credit as a project? The Tide hit a mine off of Normandy and had 100% casualties, on of the few minesweepers to do so. It was also one of the minesweepers that crossed the channel the night before D-Day. Many interesting personal stories and yeas of reunion material.
Incidentally I have been a stamp collector since 1962, and am building a large WWII stamp album with the related history included. I read your dissertation Stamping American Memory: Collectors, Citizens, Commemorates, and the Post. Fascinating! It is one of my favorite compilations and dissertations!
Please me know if you have any suggestions to find someone to get the documentary going. Thank you for all you are doing for American History at GMU.
Regards,
Mark Zangara
