FAST TRAINERS,

I am writing to update you on some upcoming changes in internship and licensure requirements.

One Year Internship
Effective Fall 2014, students wishing to complete an on-the-job internship will need to register for a three credit course during the Fall or Spring semester of your internship year. The course will be considered pass or fail; marks will be posted on your transcript at the conclusion of the semester. This change is being made for accreditation purposes and to better assist students who plan to transfer a VA license to another state by documenting internship experience on your transcript. Once you have met all licensure requirements (course work; testing; endorsements) and your internship has been documented on your transcript, you will be ready to start the licensure application process.

The new for-credit on the job internship will mirror student teaching. Interns will be required to submit reflections and other documentation to the course instructor in order to receive credit for the course. Students entering the program in Summer/Fall 2014 will be required to complete all licensure course work, endorsements, and testing before they are eligible to register for an on-the-job internship. Please contact us with any questions.

Licensure Testing Updates
The Department of Education has announced changes to the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA) and Praxis II: Elementary Education Content Knowledge exams, in addition to other Praxis II exams.

VCLA (ESL and Elementary Education Students)
Effective January 1, 2014, test takers will now be required to earn increased raw scorers in order to achieve on overall passing score on the VCLA. Both sections of the exam (Reading and Writing) will still be required and the overall passing score of 470 will remain the same. If you have already passed these exams prior to January, your scores are still going to be valid under the old system. You will not need to retest.

Praxis II: Elementary Education Content Knowledge (Elementary Education Students)
Effective July 1, 2014, the Virginia Department of Education will require the Praxis Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects (5031) Assessment. For the new exam, licensure candidates will be required to meet passing requirements for all four subtests. There will not be a composite score. First time test takers will be required to take all four sections in one sitting. If a passing score is not achieved on all four tests the first time the test is completed, you will then be able to take that section as a stand-alone test. In other words, the first time you take the exam, you must complete all subtests. After that, you may retake any sections you did not pass as stand-alone exams. If you have already passed the old Praxis II exam prior to July 1, your scores will still be valid. You will not have to take the new exam.

For additional information on these changes, please see the Superintendent's Memo at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/administrators/superintendents_memos/2013/211-13.shtml
