have you set CLASSPATH properly?
if you're unsure check out the Java section at:
http://www.dynamic-apps.com/tutorials/classpath.jsp
alternatively download the eclipse environment from
www.eclipse.org
and set up ECJ as a project - it works very well once you have set up
the run parameters correctly and make coding and debugging a LOT faster.
