CALL FOR PAPERS
NICSO 2011 is the fifth edition of the International Workshop on
Nature Inspired Cooperative Strategies for Optimization and aims at
promoting deeper investigations on cooperative problem solving
strategies and bringing together international researchers and
practitioners from different disciplines to exchange ideas about
emerging new research areas. Biological and other natural processes
have always been a source of inspiration for computer science and
information technology. We seek contributions that are inspired by
Nature and that encompass a range of spatio-temporal scales, for
visionary conceptions of information processing and computation as
pertaining to cooperation mechanisms in the context of problem
solving.
Submitted papers will undergo a rigorous blind peer review process.
Selection criteria will be based on relevance, originality,
significance, impact, technical soundness and quality of the
presentation. Contributions are expected to provide original results,
insights and experimental innovations. Manuscripts must be in PDF, not
exceeding 12 pages and conforming to the Latex template at the
Springer's Instructions for Authors page. Contributions are welcome to

Call for Papers
Nature-inspired optimization algorithms have attracted a lot of
attention over the last decades. They are well-established methods
in various research fields, because they can efficiently solve hard
scientific and engineering problems. These algorithms require only
minor information about the underlying models (objective functions).
Today there are a number of established algorithms that exhibit
a plethora of applications in almost all major engineering fields.
Genetic algorithms, evolution strategies, evolutionary algorithms,
ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization, and differential
evolution are some of the most important methods, counting a huge
number of research works. Communications constitute a research
area where nature-inspired algorithms have offered significant
contributions. Specialized variants of the algorithms have been
used for hardware design, data transmission, network design, routing,
scheduling, and resource allocation, offering solutions with significant
economic and social impact. Signal processing is another field where
nature-inspired algorithms have exhibited promising results. Image
processing, speech processing and recognition, adaptive filtering,
wavelet optimization, and software synthesis are some of the
problems tackled through nature-inspired optimization algorithms,
alone or in combination with other popular computational intelligence
methodologies.
The present special issue is devoted to recent developments (both
theoretical and applications) of nature-inspired optimization algorithms
in any aspect of communications and signal processing. Original
high-quality papers are solicited on the application of nature-inspired

Abstract
========
Knowledge fields like Parallel Computer Architectures, Parallel and
Distributed Computing and Bioinspired Algorithms, many different in a first
approach, are able to find transversal elements that enrich them. Therefore,
the aim of this fourth workshop is to support any proposal that traverses
these fields. Bioinspired Algorithms comprise a set of heuristics that can
help to optimize a wide range of problems. Among them, many tasks that
parallel architecture designers develop may be optimized. In addition,
Bioinspired Algorithms may help finding solutions regarding compilation and
resource sharing issues, which are interesting problems for parallel
architectures. Parallel architecture designers may also propose
infrastructures that allow the increase of computing performance of
Bioinspired Algorithms, which usually face real-world problems that manage
huge amounts of data. Alternatives to the classical sequential solution are
needed by this community.
The topics include, but are not limited to:

INTRODUCTION:
Recently a large number of bio-inspired computational methods have been used
(also called methods of Natural Computing) to solve computationally hard
problems in many domains. These methods have proven to be successful for
different types of problems with unknown and uncertain data where the
traditional approaches are not so effective. It is estimated that the biological
life that evolved during millions of years will be a fruitful source of
inspiration for the development of new computational methods offer in the years
to come and they will represent an important research direction in the
Artificial Intelligence mainstream.
OBJECTIVE OF THE SPECIAL ISSUE:
From a practical perspective, an essential research direction is represented by
the development of highly complex systems (usually agent-based) that
intelligently solve problems of very high difficulty. We consider complex
systems composed from a large number of components (agents) capable to make
specialized computations in the problem space. Suchdevelopments are usually
composed of a very large number of computational components, who interact many
times nonlinearly, forming as a whole a complex problem solving system.A
subclass of complex systems includes the hybrid systems composed from different
type of artificial components capable to make computations, and human
specialists that could interact in different points of decisions during the
problems solving. Research related to complex systems address analysis of many
aspects such as complexity, self-organization, emergence, intelligence,
hybridization and so forth. Many computational complex systems developments
require interdisciplinary approaches, which must include methods developed in
different sciences, like sub-domains of the Artificial Intelligence like Natural
Computing and Intelligent Agents.
A particular subject by interest for this issue is represented by the
self-organizing complex systems that use methods of natural computing in
different tasks, like: problems solving, self-organization etc.This issue will
centralize some state of the art results in the theme, which we estimate that
will remain an important research direction in the near future.

Applications (ISDA) is a major annual international conference to

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES AND POST-CONFERENCE PUBLICATION
All accepted papers will be published by the IEEE, will be included
in the IEEE-Xplore and the IEEE digital libraries and arranged for
indexing through the IEE INSPEC, EI (Compendex), Thomson ISI, and
other indexing services.
Authors of the selected papers will be invited to submit an extended
version of their contribution for possible inclusion in special issues
of international journals (to be announced later).
The Program Committee will select two winners for the Best Paper Award
(all regular papers are eligible) and two winners for the Best Student
Paper Award (to be eligible, the student must be the first author). The
award winners of both regular and student papers will be presented with

ALEA invites contributions in all aspects related to Artificial Life

Submissions must be original and not published elsewhere. Papers
should not exceed fifteen (15) pages in length and must be formatted
according to Springer’s LNCS instructions for authors. Papers must be
submitted in PDF and will not be accepted in any other format. Papers
that exceed 15 pages or do not follow the LNCS guidelines risk being
rejected automatically without a review. More information and

The submissions will be peer reviewed by at least three members of the
Programme Committee. The reviewing process is double blind, so authors
should remove names and affiliations from the submitted papers, and
must take reasonable care not to indirectly disclose their identity.
References to own work can be included in the paper, but should be
referred to in the third person.
The authors of accepted papers will have to improve their paper on the
basis of the recommendations from the reviewers and will be asked to
send a camera ready version of their manuscripts. Even though the
submissions can be made in PDF (preferable) or PS, we encourage
authors to prepare their papers in TEX or LATEX because these are more
convenient source formats for the camera ready final version. At least
one author of each accepted work must register for the conference and
present the work.
Accepted papers will be presented orally or as posters. The best
accepted papers will appear in the proceedings published by Springer
in the Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence (LNAI), a subseries of
LNCS. The remaining accepted papers will be published in a local
edition, both in hard-copy, CD-ROM and on the web.

The 7th International Conference on Natural Computation (ICNC'11) and
the 8th International Conference on Fuzzy Systems and Knowledge
Discovery (FSKD'11) will be jointly held from 26-28 July 2011, in
Shanghai, China.. The deadline for the 2nd (final) round of
submissions is 16 May 2011 (Papers already submitted in the previous
round should not be re-submitted; however, authors who have already
submitted in the 1st round are welcome to submit new papers).We
cordially invite you to submit a paper or invited session proposal to
the conferences.
Shanghai is the largest city in China, with famous historical and
cultural heritage. Attractions include Yuyuan Garden ("Happy Garden"
built in Ming Dynasty), Shanghai Museum with 120,000 pieces of rare
relics, Shanghai World Financial Center, Jade Buddha Temple (Song
Dynasty), Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Zhujiajiao Water Town, and Expo
2010 site.
All papers in conference proceedings will be indexed by both EI
Compendex and ISTP, as well as included in the IEEE Xplore (IEEE
Conference Record Number for ICNC’11: 18082; IEEE Conference Record
Number for FSKD’11: 18083). Extended versions of selected best papers
will appear in an ICNC-FSKD special issue of International Journal of
Intelligent Systems, an SCI-indexed journal (Impact Factor: 1.194).
ICNC-FSKD is a premier international forum for scientists and
researchers to present the state of the art of data mining and
intelligent methods inspired from nature, particularly biological,
linguistic, and physical systems, with applications to signal
processing, design, and more. Previously, the joint conferences in
2005 through 2010 each attracted over 3000 submissions from around the
world. ICNC'11-FSKD'11 is technically co-sponsored by the IEEE
Circuits and Systems Society. The registration fee of US*D 400
includes proceedings, lunches, dinners, banquet, coffee breaks, and
all technical sessions.
To promote international participation of researchers from outside the
country/region where the conference is held (i.e., China’s mainland),
researchers outside of China’s mainland are encouraged to propose
invited sessions. The first author of each paper in an invited session
must not be affiliated with an organization in China’s mainland. All
papers in the invited sessions can be marked as "Invited Paper". One
organizer for each invited session with at least 6 registered papers
will enjoy an honorarium of US*D 400. Invited session organizers will
solicit submissions, conduct reviews and recommend accept/reject
decisions on the submitted papers. Invited session organizers will be
able to set their own submission and review schedules, as long as a
list of recommended papers is determined by 30 March 2010. Each
invited session proposal should include: (1) the name, bio, and
contact information of each organizer of the invited session; (2) the

Overview
========
The foreign exchange (FX) market is a financial market for trading
currencies to enable international trade and investment. Goal of the GECCO
2011 Industrial Challenge is to find profitable trading strategies for
automatic foreign exchange trading. A trading strategy is a function that
generates a trading signal based on exchange rate time series data. Trading
strategies are scored by cost-corrected profitability and risk. This scoring
is based on a representative set of real-world exchange rate time series.
The challenge is organized in two rounds. In the first round, participants
submit the sum of their scores reached on three test data sets supplied.
They also submit their executable software together with short report
describing their approach. In the second and final round, the ten best
submissions of the first round will be ranked by their scores computed on
new test data sets collected after the submission date, for the same
currency pairs as used in the first round. The winner of the challenge will
be the participant with the highest score in the final round.
Highlights of the GECCO 2011 Industrial Challenge include:
* Interesting Problem Domain: The FX market, with its complex patterns and
behavior, offers a fascinating test case for innovative optimization
methods.
* Real-world Data: Multiple real intraday FX return time series are provided
for training and testing trading strategies.
* Realistic Quality Measurement: Trading strategies are scored using a
simple but realistic trading simulator that takes trading costs and risk
into account.
* Fair Submission Assessment: Winners are determined in a second round by
simulated trading based on new FX return data sets, rendering accidental
overfitting or cheating impossible.
