CITIES: A Journey to Post-Communism: Berlin, Budapest, Belgrade,
Sarajevo

Participants will have the opportunity to examine political,
economic, social, and cultural developments in post-communist,
East-Central Europe. By visiting four countries - Germany, Hungary,
Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina -- students will be able to
observe the tremendous transformation of East-Central Europe since
the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. History in this region is not
merely confined to dusty books in libraries; the burden of history
seems to resonate in the lives of individuals and plays a key role
in the formation of a collective identity within each society in the
region. By walking the streets of these magnificent European cities,
visiting relevant sites, and talking to locals, participating
students should be able to develop an appreciation of what is meant
by "the burden of history" in East-Central Europe.**

- GREECE AND TURKEY - Cities and Gods: From Athens to Istanbul

See the Parthenon. Visit Olympia. Take a cruise to the island of
Crete and visit the ancient ruins of Knossos. In Turkey you'll see
one of the best preserved Roman cities Ephesus. You'll also
see Pergamun, Troy and Istanbul, where you'll visit the Blue Mosque
and Hajia Sophia. All while exploring the connection between gods
and cities through text, classic art and architecture.

In addition to learning about changing political and economic
conditions in today's Cuba through classroom lectures, you will get
to experience the realities of the Cuban economy first-hand, whether
through a site visit to an agricultural cooperative/agribusiness
micro-industry project or more informally by eating lunch in a
typical "palador," a family-run restaurant, and talking with the
owners. You will visit sites in and around the city of Havana,
including the Plaza de la Revolución, the José Martí Memorial, the
Museo de Belles Artes, and a Cuban painting studio. At the Port of
Mariel, you will learn about the ongoing joint investment project
between Cuba and Brazil.

most important organizations from an interdisciplinary perspective.
Using frameworks provided by economics, political science,
international relations, and international law, the course will
address the following questions:
What are functions of international organizations?
How can international organizations diminish or solve
collective action problems? Are they successful in doing so?
What are the main obstacles faced by international organizations?

Experience firsthand the sights and sounds of Vietnam while you
explore Vietnamese culture and its influence on present-day society
and politics.During this two week program, you will visit Vietnam's
most important political, cultural, and economic centers including:
Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and the Mekong Delta.You will also
explore ancient Vietnam in Hanoi's Old Quarters; the breathtaking
view of Ha Long Bay, a world's heritage site, the ancient city of
Hoi An; and the charming highland resort of Sapa.

This is a Mason faculty-led spring semester program offering 16
resident credits.Students can choose to live in shared student
apartments or with a family. No previous experience with Italian
language is necessary.The Florence program would be ideal for majors
or minors of CONF, GLOA, GOVT, HIST, ITAL, or SOCI.
/This unique city will be yours to absorb, explore, taste, marvel,
and enjoy for an entire semester! Excursions to Rome and Sicily are
included in the program and several other trips are available from
our host institution for a small fee.Participants study at the
//Centro Fiorenza/ <http://www.centrofiorenza.com/whereweare.asp>/,
founded in 1982 and located right in the center of Florence.Classes
typically meet four days a week, allowing students ample opportunity
to travel throughout Italy and Europe on the weekends and during
Spring Break in March./
The Mason faculty to accompany the group changes from year to
year.This spring 2013, Dr. David Haines, from the Department of
Sociology and Anthropology, will be leading the program.The spring
2013 courses in Florence have been approved for the following credits:
ˇItalian language (ITAL 110 for 6 credits, or ITAL 101, 210, 250 330 or
331 for 3 credits)
ˇ"Italian Culture and Society" (HIST 398 or SOCI 395, for 1 credit).
This course will be conducted mainly outside of the classroom, including
day trips on four Fridays to Prato, Bologna, Greve in Chianti, and
Viareggio!
ˇ"Head Scarves and Blue Cards: European Migration in Comparative
Perspectives," taught by Professor Haines and including a four-day
excursion to Berlin (ANTH 399 or SOCI 395, also seeking credit for CONF,
for 3 credits).
