*Study Abroad Photo Contest Winner: New Perspective of a Semester in
Florence
*
**Molly Snyder's photo was one of the big vote-getters from this year's
annual Study Abroad Photo Contest sponsored by the Center for Global
Education. Molly had participated in CGE's "Semester in Florence
<http://globaled.gmu.edu/programs/semester/florence.html>" last spring.
She is a senior at Mason, studying Art History. Molly had been abroad
once before during high school and was eager to go again. After hearing
about the semester program in Italy, she decided to apply.
In Florence, she took a total of 15 credits which included classes in
Italian, the History of the Mafia, Art History, and a course on Dante's
/Divine Comedy/. Mason professor, John Farina, taught one of those
courses. Molly visited San Miniato al Monte during one of the many class
field trips, a beautiful basilica located uphill from Piazzale
Michelangelo in the city of Florence. She returned later on one of her
free weekends to take photos.
The award-winning picture was one of many she'd taken from various
angles. Although she had no formal training in photography, she loved
her new camera. Molly had tons of fun snapping random shots from San
Miniato and seeing how they'd turn out. She chose to submit this photo
because she liked the close up of the statue's face which framed the
Duomo Cathedral in the background.
While Molly may be leaving George Mason after graduation next spring,
the memories from her study abroad experience will stay with her always.
She encourages everyone to study abroad, to gain the confidence of
knowing "you can!"
There are still openings on the Semester in Florence this spring 2013!
